Industrial hygiene in Phoenix: our home base in the Valley

We are based here, so for us Phoenix is home and not one more city on a service-area list.

Our field is industrial hygiene, the discipline behind workplace air monitoring and noise surveys.

What we do in the Valley

We work in four fields here:

We do this work on site for manufacturing, aerospace, electronics, steel fabrication and metal finishing companies across metropolitan Phoenix.

A typical project is 1 to 3 days at your facility. We arrive before the shift to calibrate our equipment, sample through the shift, and calibrate again at the end.

The permit detail that catches Phoenix plants

Your air permit is probably a county permit, not a state one.

Most environmental programs are delegated to the states to run, and Arizona goes a step further. For most sources in the Phoenix metropolitan area, the air permit is issued by the Maricopa County Air Quality Department and not by ADEQ, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. Plants that look for their obligations at the state level end up with the wrong agency.

Pima County has its own department for the Tucson area, so if you operate in both, you answer to two air agencies.

We do not handle air permits, but this is a detail to get right in your register of compliance obligations.

The state report that shares your Form R deadline

Form R is the full annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) report filed with EPA, and Form A is the shorter version.

If your plant files a Form R or Form A, Arizona law requires two more things (A.R.S. §§ 49-962 and 49-963). You must also prepare a pollution prevention plan, and you must submit a Toxic Data Report through myDEQ, the state's online system. The Toxic Data Report is due July 1, the same date as the federal Form R.

That makes two filings in two systems, with one deadline. Filing your Form R through TRI-MEweb, EPA's online reporting system, does not cover the state report.

Who's here

Phoenix industry is more varied than its reputation suggests.

Around all of them sit the suppliers: machining, finishing, plating, coating and fabrication shops. That is where most air monitoring and noise survey work actually takes place.

We also work statewide and across the United States. → Where we work
